Beds - The Stigma of Import Beds Vs Domestic Beds

Beds can be constructed from any number of woods, metals from any number of sources and countries. Sorting through the different woods and where the beds are made can often be a little confusing. In this article we'll examine import beds vs. domestic beds and see if we can shed a little light on the various differences between these products and how they've developed in the marketplace over time.

Light Oak Beds

Years ago much of the United States market for beds contained products that were sourced and made in the USA. These manufacturers would use domestic woods like ash, oak, maple, birch, poplar and many other species found in North America. For the most part these domestic woods have been harvested responsibly as wood is like any other crop. It is planted then harvested. American made products have always had the reputation in the United States as being of high quality either due in part to national pride or because the techniques in construction have borrowed from high-end European furniture building traditions handed down throughout the centuries. Whatever the case American made products sold in the United States have for the most part been presented in a very positive manner.

Around 5-10 years ago an influx of imported beds and goods began coming into the North American market. These products were made from different mixed tropical hardwoods like ramin or other Asian species of woods like pine and oak. The low cost of materials and labor allowed these products to enter into the North American market with a distinct advantage over domestic products which could neither compete with the price points nor the large array of product offerings. Furniture shoppers were delighted in the new selection of beds and products and the competitive price points of this furniture and sales in domestic goods began to drop and many American bed manufacturers were either forced to close their doors or to start importing the same products that were competing against them to stay in competition with other suppliers.

In this same time frame a growing number of consumers were finding though that just because these new beds and products offered a lower price point didn't necessarily mean that they were also competitive in quality and these same products offering low price and new bed styles were quickly being discovered to have inherent flaws in construction and materials which led to many failures in design. These products had established themselves in many of the mass merchant stores and soon became the norm for low price furniture.

It's not without saying though that there aren't import furniture brands that should be overlooked. In fact Canada is quickly becoming a larger player in import furniture especially in the way of metal beds, wood beds and other furniture. Many of these products are priced above standard import furniture but the quality is superior to most imports and the old adage "you get what you pay for" definitely rings true here. These products are made from quality North American materials and observe very high quality control that is parallel with the controls used by manufacturers in the United States.

In recent years the stigma of import products being inferior has quietly diminished as word of mouth about inferior imports have made the general public more aware of quality concerns and making sure that the import products they are considering are of higher quality and craftsmanship. This has definitely helped to weed out the lesser products and allow focus on the brands that have applied good quality standards and materials into their products. This also applies to helping to find quality import beds which are often made to the specification and requirements of American companies who distribute them.

Whether you're considering an American made bed from oak or ash or if you like the exotic look of import beds consider the many factors behind each in terms of quality, construction and the materials that went into the bed. Often price is affected by what you're getting and the cost associated with what you see will tell you in most cases if you're getting your money's worth. It's always better to shop from top down or highest quality down to find the best product at a price you're willing pay.
